NWSFS members are encouraged to attend, and non-members in the SF/Fannish community are welcome, as always.

Travel one block and turn left at traffic light on Ruddell Road
This is a two way road.
Travel one block and turn left at traffic light onto Pacific Road
This is a one way road.
Get into right lane,
Tea Leaf is on the right, before the next traffic light

Saturday - 2/18/2012, NWSFS Social at the Brathouse in Kirkland

February is here and that must mean it’s time for the Pseudo Summer Solstice Spaghetti Sauce Off.

Please join your fellow NWSFS members at our February Social on Saturday, February 18, 2012, at the Brathouse at 9431 126th Ave NE in Kirkland. The social will begin at 6 PM and end at 10 PM.

The Pseudo Summer Solstice Spaghetti Sauce Off is an annual traditional NWSFS event. NWSFS provides spaghetti, salad, and soft drinks. Contestants bring various spaghetti sauces for you to sample and then you vote for your favorite. The contributors of the most popular sauces get small prizes. If you plan to bring a sauce, please bring at least two quarts of sauce, and make some note of ingredients for those of us with food allergies or other restrictions.

If you can, please bring a crock pot to keep your sauce warm, and a ladle. If you cannot bring a crock pot, please call ahead to make arrangements for use of a burner or other equipment in the kitchen. This is still something of a potluck. Please bring a contribution of munchies, side dish, or desert. To support the contest, there is a small fee for the Sauce - Off. The fee is $3 for NWSFS members and $5 for non members. As always, NWSFS members are encouraged to attend, and non-members in the community are welcome. We hope to see you there.

Logistical information:
Smoking areas are outside. The house has cats, which are locked away for the social. The main entrance is up two small steps (ramp available). Parking is on-street, and generally available. The closest bus stop is 1/3 mile away (2 blocks west, 1 block north), at the corner of 124th Ave. NE and NE 97th, and serves the #230 bus (transfer from Seattle at the Bellevue Transit Center). The last bus is at approximately 10:30 P.M.

Directions:
Take the 85th St. Exit off of I-405 (Kirkland) and travel east on 85th.

Go up the hill. Get into the left lane and after a couple of blocks, turn left onto 126th. It's not marked too well, but the landmark is the Safeway on the right and a Shell station on the left.

Once on 126th, travel down the hill about two blocks. The road ends at a "T" intersection and the house is the last house on your left. It's light green.

Welcome to issue 72 of the Edge of Propinquity. This is the final issue of the webzine. Originally, TEoP was supposed to be a one year project. It grew beyond that and I am so proud of what I have created here. But it is time to say good-bye. After six years, I have decided to move on to a new long term project. I will post about that when things are ready.

I hope you enjoy this final issue of the Edge of Propinquity. In this final month we have the loss of a loved one, a new hero rising, the end of a fight, an awakening and the realization that life really isn't that bad after all.

Well, I got the upgraded web site loaded, and a relatively few bugs have been ironed out. There are still a few articles to finish, but the big issue is that this sets the stage for the downloads shopping cart.

Another feature now available is a page where wannabe cover artists can post samples of their work in hopes of making connections with authors/publishers. Anyone interested in that, please drop me a line.

The Klein Bottle...

One of the core parts of The Written Wyrd as to provide support to self- and small press published authors. Having giving the matter much thought, I have posted materials to the web site concerning the Klein Bottle award. This is a key part of this whole project, intended to provide feedback, recognition, distribution, and technical support to new authors and cover artists. The whole things is still in the formative stages, but the time has come to start hammering it together, so I hope all of you who are concerned with developing new writing talent (whether you are an author or not) will check out the web site. Please don't sluff this off as something for others to deal with. Your ideas, suggestions, and active support are the key to this, and without you, it won't happen.

Making Book...

Something I saw at the library that holds promise as a new distribution outlet for authors: a new company called Playaway is offering small self contained audio book players the size of a Walkman to public libraries for checkout. I understand they already have hundreds of titles available. The works are performed by professional actors, so the quality should be better than some self made audio books. Interesting!

He Said What!...

I have just received my first book review on 'Trial' from fellow author Elton Elliott, down in Portland. Here are a few excerpts:

This novel takes the classic notion of First Contact and gives it a few twists, some tugs and more than a yank or two...
... powerful aliens, with a spacecraft the size of Manhattan suddenly appear in orbit and send down an emissary, who in proper Earth fashion is promptly killed. The subtitle is: A Science fiction Political Thriller. And it is very political, with the author's humanist sensibilities informing both plot and character development. Throughout the trial of the human assassin many fascinating historical events on Earth pertaining to first contact between powerful and not-so-powerful societies are brought to the fore.
TRIAL is both a compelling read and a page-turning read and above all a fascinating meditation on the perils associated with powerful technologically advanced aliens contacting present-day humanity. If you like well plotted thrillers, full of fascinating characters and interesting historical details, you'll enjoy TRIAL. I read it in one sitting (kept me up until 4 AM) which is the highest praise I can give any novel.

Doctor Who Marathon: Saturday, January 22, 6pm....
